Direct Instruction - the most thoroughly
learner-verified teaching model in the history of American
education.

In 1999: 24 popular
school-wide approaches were carefully analyzed. Direct Instruction
is one of just three that showed strong evidence of improved
student achievement. (Education Weekly, 2/17/99)

Direct Instruction
Direct Instruction (DI) is a powerful, highly
efficient teaching method that is one of the keys to Change
of Mind's incredible success rate. Direct Instruction was
designed and developed by Siegfried Engelmann and his colleagues
at the University of Illinois in 1964. After a thorough review
of all possible curricula, it was adopted by Change of Mind
in 1994.
The Advantages of Direct Instruction

intensive participation by both instructor and learner. |
Emphasizes
face-to-face teaching with carefully sequenced materials. |
Materials
are field tested and proven to work. |
Step-by-step
plans link successful teaching with successful learning. |
Designed
to build upon existing skills and progress at a rapid
rate. |
Promotes
a positive attitude toward learning by both teacher and
student. |
Provides
learners with constant feedback. |
Is
one of only 3 of 24 popular school reform models having
strong evidence that they improve student achievement.

Has
been research-validated and learner-verified in over 3,000
test studies. |
How Direct Instruction works
An extremely successful model, DI employs
a well-organized presentation of course materials that are
designed to promote thorough understanding and rapid progress
in a controlled sequence.
Direct Instruction attempts to control all
variables that make a difference in the performance of the
student. By carefully assessing a student's level of achievement
and placing him or her properly, acceleration in learning
is possible. Although DI's methodology is structured, Change
of Mind's one-on-one approach to Direct Instruction ensures
that each student receives coursework specifically tailored
to his or her individual needs.
By utilizing one teacher for one student,
the approach is personal and efficient. The teacher is responsible
for what the student learns. A lively and fast-paced curriculum,
Direct Instruction provides strategies for learning through
careful instruction in all sub-sets. The method is reinforcing
to both teacher and student, as it allows for individualized
provisions.
Positive reinforcement is one of the guiding
principles at Change of Mind. Through a systematic process
of setting and achieving goals, each student learns to believe
in his or her abilities. Heightened self-confidence leads
to motivation. And this motivation - combined with our efficient
learning method - is what drives success.
